About the Flicks
The Flicks is…
The Flicks has four movie screens with 192, 96, 58 and 42 seats, lobby café with a fireplace, an upstairs meeting room, a garden patio with a fountain and café seating, and a video/DVD rental shop which features the same kind of movies that we choose to show in our theatres. We are locally owned and look forward to seeing new customers as well as our regulars. We couldn't do this without you and our wonderful staff!
In our auditoriums, we feature independent, foreign and art films, plus the best of the Hollywood movies. The Flicks has served espresso beverages longer than any business in Idaho. We have featured signature salads, sizzling burgers, the best soups in town and delectable desserts as well as domestic, imported and micro brews and a selection of fine wines since we first opened our doors.
We’re Still Here...
The Flicks opened September 21, 1984 by Carole and Rick Skinner, at that time we had one screen, the café and patio. The second screen was added in 1988, the third and fourth were added in 1997. The Video Shop was added in 1989. Our business and recognition in the Boise community has risen continually over the last thirty seven years. We weathered the onslaught of two additional Cineplex Odeon multiplexes added in 1988 (that have since closed), Reel Cinema multiplexes, a Regal/Edwards 21-plex in 1997 and a Regal/Edwards 9-plex in 2005 (also now closed). In 2006 our right to continue to allow beer and wine in our theatres as well as the patio and dining room was upheld by the State Legislature, to the relief of our customers who appreciate the relaxing, grown-up atmosphere.
The Flicks is an Oasis…
The Flicks is an integral part of Boise’s cultural and arts scene, with long-term residents making a Flicks visit part of their weekly routine; many newcomers citing our business as one of the key elements in making Boise a livable city. The Flicks has been voted Idaho Statesman's Best Movie Theatre in Boise numerous times. The Flicks has been recognized with The Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 1997, The Elm Award from the LGBTQ community as the most supportive, non-gay business in 1991, 1994, 1996, and 2001. President Carole Skinner received United Vision for Idaho's Most Progressive Businessperson of the Year Award in 2002 and was honored in 2009 with the Teevee Award from Idaho’s Public Access Television Station. We have won Boise Weekly's Best of Boise so many times that they gave us a perpetual award in 2019.
The Flicks is Fun…
The charming atmosphere, including fresh flowers in the restrooms, framed movie posters in the dining room, hanging geraniums and gurgling fountain on the patio, and friendly service, where the employees remember if you like your latte with 1% or your Guinness at room temperature make for a memorable entertainment experience. In addition to welcoming a diverse and discerning clientele, community events are also a part of our mission.
